Before Egypt

Ask yourself:

What do I want to know about the start of ancient Kemet?

Write the answer down in a journal.

Human beings inhabited the Nile Valley for many thousands of years before the development of the country we know as Kemet. When thinking about what led to the culture that became Kemet, it’s important to remember some specific things:

1. Human ancestral activity is longest and reaches the farthest back in history (according to archeological finds) in the areas of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa.

2. Sites, such as Nabta Playa (Nubian desert) demonstrate a respect for, and observance of,

many ideas that would be present in Kemetic culture.

3. Naqada historic sites show that cultural influence moved from south to the north and Nubian culture was also present in what would become Kemet, in predynastic times.

Question:

Did Kemet’s culture develop from the south or from outside of Africa?

Question:

Were there specific Nubian cultures in the areas that developed into Kemet?

Question:

Did cultural aspects of what would become Kemet, exist before there was a Kemet?

Thousands of years of history existed in the same vein, before Kemet got started.

Ask yourself:

What do I still want to learn about Kemet?

Write those things down in your journal.
