Basics of Division
Division is the opposite (or inverse) of multiplication. So, as you can imagine, you will need to know these facts, as well as you do your multiplication facts…but it’s easy because they are related.
When you divide you are just breaking up a group of things into smaller groups. Just like you gather things into to groups to multiply them, you can break things into groups to see how many there are in each group.
If I have $8 and I wanted to divide them between 2 people, each person would get $4.
Instead of having money, I have balls in the above example, but it doesn’t matter—division applies to almost anything.
Repetition and Practice
The facts that you learned in multiplication, translate to division. If 9 * 7 = 63, then 63 ÷ 7 = 9 and 63 ÷ 9 = 7.
Somethings you are going to get to know through repetition and practice.
Summary
Division is the opposite of multiplication—you can group things together to see how many are in each group.
You will have to get to know your division facts as well as you know your multiplication facts.
FYI…fractions are related to division, in fact, a fraction is really a division problem.
