Fractions - you can help your child with them

Fractions are just ways to cutting up a whole into parts. Some things you can do to help your child understand fractions as he or she gets introduced to them in elementary school are:

  • make sure your child understand multiplication facts, first

  • make sure your child understand division facts well

  • expose your child to fractions in everyday life: pizza, cake, $0.50 is half (or a fraction of) a dollar, etc.

Pay close attention to how your child does on math homework and tests related to fractions…how he or she does when it comes to fractions may be an indicator of whether they will find other concepts like proportions, ratios, simplifying expressions in algebra, etc…difficult or not.
