Why Egypt?

Why Egypt?  I have often wondered why didn’t God just deliver the Israelites from Egypt?  Why did God take time going through signs and wonders or allow hundreds of years to pass while their situation got worse over time?

God seems to want to prove to the Egyptians, as much as the Israelites, that he is God.

Exodus 7:3 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.

Egypt stood at the center of major part of the world and how that history developed should not be forgotten.
